Customer experience: How To Command The Highest Prices

I was catching up on a few issues of the WSJ when I noticed a photo of a model dressed in leather, passed out on a chair with a slice of pizza on its chest and an unlit Marlboro in its hand.

It was a baby picture.

And not one of those photo shoots where you just lay the kid on a pink sheet, wait for a cute angelic face and snap the pic. That might set you back $50-$60.

Nope this was a full on Punk Rock scene. A sleeping baby, “passed out,” in a pint-size nightclub with a half-eaten pizza and a glass of whiskey. The Ramones-theme photo pays tribute to the 1970s punk band.

Which set the parents back a cool $8,500.

Talk about price elasticity.

  • Take a basic commodity; the photograph, which you can do yourself for free.

  • You can bump it up a notch and have Walmart do it for 30 bucks.

  • Hire a photographer and drop a few hundred.

Or...

For the low low price of $11,000 you can have your little dumpling dressed all in black leather looking like they came right out of Game of Thrones, propped up on a custom made throne.

We see price elasticity everywhere.

Men's underwear: Duluth Trading $28 for one pair vs. Hanes 9 pack for $14.99.

Disney: $189 for one day in the park vs. $20 for your county fair.

Ferrari: $604,999 (2022 Ferrari SF90 Stradale) vs. $8999 for a Kia. They both have 4 wheels, go forwards and backwards and come in cherry-red.

What about other commodity businesses?

Like yours.

Dentist, carpet cleaner, financial planner, home inspector, copywriter, etc.

If underwear can be sold at a 16x multiple, why not your services.
